Public Action to Deliver Shelter in West Suburban Cook County

E-mail: contactus@westsuburbanpads.org

Website: http://www.westsuburbanpads.org/dnn/

West Suburban PADS is a 501(c) 3, not-for-profit agency, serving the needs of homeless people in our community through various levels of housing and supportive services. PADS offers programs which are building blocks for self-sufficiency and which help people transition out of their homeless situation.

Formed in response to an increasing number of homeless people in the Oak Park , River Forest and Forest Park communities, Tri-Village PADS was founded in 1991 to offer hope and assistance to those without the means to help themselves. In October 1992, the Emergency Shelter program opened its doors with 250 trained volunteers and one congregation donating space for the program. In 2000, the agency changed its name to West Suburban PADS to reflect its expanded service area in western Cook County .

Today, West Suburban PADS offers programs and services in four areas: Emergency Shelter, Case Management and Supportive Housing (both transitional and permanent housing available) and Homeless Prevention.   Programs are designed to address the varying levels of client functioning, services needs and income.  West Suburban PADS  provides more than 500 men, women and children with 8,600 nights of shelter and 24,000 meals annually.

People who need PADS include a wide range of individuals and families who have fallen on hard times, due to a short financial crisis, long-term housing instability, medical, physical, or psychological condition which prevents them from being able to work and/or afford housing, victims of domestic violence, and substance abusers. The majority of those served by PADS, are low income individuals who are unable to adequately afford housing as well as afford other primary needs (i.e. food, health/car insurance, clothing, child care). Some have poor credit, some have no family support, some may have a multitude of issues that they must work out before being able to sustain permanent housing.
