Parenthesis Parent-Child Center was founded in 1980 by two women—parents themselves—studying early childhood development at the Erickson Institute in Chicago. The name supports the belief that every Parent has a thesis on how to raise children. At Parenthesis parents come together to share and test their ideas about being parents.

Parenthesis provides a setting for families of young children to gather, talk and play much like yesterday’s neighborhoods and extended families. Located in Oak Park, the Parenthesis parent-Child Center offers adult conversation and workshops for parents plus supervised, stimulating playrooms for young children. Being a part of the Parenthesis family can enhance the quality of family life at home. When families come together to talk, share a laugh and play, they return home with renewed energy and enthusiasm, as well as renewed confidence in their abilities to care for and nurture their children.

Parenthesis programs include a Morning Drop-In Program, for stay-at-home parents with children ages 0 through 8; Parenting On Our Own, a weekly evening program focusing on the special needs of families with one parent present; Parenteen, a weekly evening program for pregnant and parenting teen mothers and fathers; and an In-Home Parenting Support Program that provides assistance to families with children, ages 0-5, in their homes. The Morning Program is open to all families in Oak Park, River Forest and surrounding communities as well as the city’s Austin neighborhood. Parenting On Our Own, Parenteen, and In-Home Parenting Support programs are available to families in Oak Park and River Forest.
