Seven Generations Ahead (SGA) is a 501©3 non-profit organization based in Oak Park dedicated to promoting a clean environment and human health in Oak Park, River Forest, and the Chicago metropolitan area.  SGA’s name is borrowed from the Great Law of the Iroquois which states that “…in every deliberation we must consider the impact on the seventh generation”.

Since its inception in 2000, SGA has conducted community education seminars linking global environmental trends to specific actions individuals and communities can take to conserve natural resources and promote environmental and human health.  

In 2001 SGA established a Buy Local Campaign initiative designed to educate Chicago area consumers about the environmental, human health, and local economic benefits of consuming local food raised in ecologically responsible ways, while making market linkages between local family farms and consumers in Oak Park, River Forest, and the Chicago area.  

SGA has established numerous local farm buying hubs in Oak Park and River Forest, and has linked local, earth-friendly farmers to the Oak Park Farmers’ Market and to area restaurants, schools, congregations, food markets, wholesalers, and cafes.  

SGA implements its Fresh from the Farm school-based healthy eating program in Oak Park, River Forest, and Chicago schools, which includes 8-week curriculum modules, farm tours, farmer classroom visits, local chef cooking demonstrations, school-based organic garden development, weekly deliveries of fresh fruits and vegetables through the Market Basket program, parent-child healthy eating nights, and Fresh from the Farm healthy lunches.  Fresh from the Farm teaches children and parents about healthy eating, earth-friendly farming, where their food comes from, and how their food is raised.  

SGA has worked with Village of Oak Park elected officials and staff to incorporate environmental strategies and policies, including LEED-certified “green” building development, and facilitated acquisition of a $100,000 LEED-certified “green” building design grant for the Village’s new public works facility.  

SGA offers environmental strategy and policy consulting services to local governments and businesses, and is currently working with the Village to design a comprehensive environmental initiative called Sustainable Oak Park that will provide sustainability training and support comprehensive environmental planning within the Village.
